Loose Pets
Guess what day it is? It’s Bulk Comic Update Day over at my Patreon! For five bucks you can read the next eleven comics (that two weeks + one!). Usually do these bulk updates once a week so you can read a week’s worth of comics in a day, like, ALL THE TIME. Anyway…
So hey, so I seem to have gotten addicted to Star Wars audiobooks. I don’t know why. It started off as just background noise, but now I’ve been through five of them in a week and a half and I’m starting to get worried I’ll soon be through the free ones available to me and I’ll have to start buying them. I already did that with two and… well, audiobooks ain’t cheap.
Though I have discovered they’re excellent for productivity. Even with two monitors videos are distracting enough to seriously slow me down while I work. The audiobooks, though, have been great giving me that “movie”-like story without distracting me from drawing. The nice thing about the Star Wars books are the added in sound effects and the voice actors attempting to do a variety of characters (some more successful than others).
But this is an illness. It’s glorious at the moment, but I’m burning through content fast and I’m not sure what to do when I run out. There’s only, what? One hundred? Two? How many of those were made into audiobooks?! Man, why am I itching?! It’s okay, it’s okay, just gotta turn on the the third Darth Bane book… ah, yeah… that’s the stuff.
I’m good for a few hours, at least.
A large chunk of the novels have been made into audiobooks. Sadly to many of them were abridged. The Star Wars novels us the main reason I got an audible account. Have you listened to the novelization of The Force Awakens?
Disney has been on top when it comes to making audio versions of their new novels, too.
You’ll have to let us know which book is your favorite.
No, not yet but I plan to! And yeah, I noticed the insane amount of abridged versions. That was disheartening.
So I gotta fess up: I spent the better part of two hours last night creating a spreadsheet of every book in Legends and Canon and looking up if they have audio books. I think marked which do, if they were abridged, and the cost of the books. They are also in order of timeline, but that was less to do with my geekiness and more to do with the the fact Wookiepedia already had it sorted that way (which is a big help!). I’m marking off the ones I’ve listened to and I’m going to do my best to get through them all. What will help cut down on the list, though, is there are two huge chunk of books that are Scholastic series which have no audio books. But I discovered some of the comic series have them, too, so those are on the list.
I’m using YouTube and the online resources of my library to listen to what I can, and I do have at least one of the new canon audio books on hold (sadly it’s all the library owned). But I am very encouraged by the fact that every single canon book I looked up has an audio book out and it’s unabridged. So thank you, Disney!
I’ve listened to The Thrawn and Darth Bane Trilogies, which I think are good places to start. I loved Thrawn and even though Bane started off a bit slow it grew on me (love Darth Zannah!). I’d like to listen to the Thrawn duaology next but I’ve already spent too much as it is and will have to wait. My next pick will have to be from a free resource. Possibly the Darth Revan book…
Yea, I stay away from the young readers books.
Did you listen to the unabridged Thrawn Trilogy, or the abridged?Outbound Flight has a young Thrawn, so if you like him, I’d give that one a listen.
Disney has been doing great regarding their handling of the Star Wars audiobooks. I would throw so much money at them if they wrote a Knights of Ren series.
I loved the first Darth Bane book, seeing him rise through the ranks of the sith.
I’ll be staring Lost Stars soon. I’ve heard good things about it.
Pretty much I HAVE to stick with only audio books right now. When I’m not working I’m working on comics, or I’m working on projects for other people. Even when I hang out with people I sometimes bring comic pages to work on, so I almost never have free time. If it weren’t for dual monitors I would even be able to watch TV while working on stuff. 🙂 So by default I’ll never even look at the young reader books because of time.
I did listen to the unabridged Thrawn. My plans were to listen to all of the Timothy Zahn books but, again, money… But one way or another I’ll definitely get to them, and I’ll be sure to listen to that Outbound Flight. Also, rumor is Thrawn might be showing up in a Disney property soon, which will mean he’s officially back into continuity!
I bet we will get a Knights of Ren series at some point, once Episode VIII is out. I’m sure they’re just holding back so they don’t spoil anything about the movie.
On Darth Bane, the only part I struggled with was the chunk of the book he was a nobody on the mining colony. I think the weird over-the-top southern accents didn’t help. But once I got past that and the book started taking him more into Sith territory I started enjoying it a lot more. I loved the ending of the first book, too.
Do you have a particular favorite reader? My exposure to it all is limited to Marc Thompson and Jonathan Davis, but I immediately loved Marc’s work (though his attempt at doing the voices of the female characters was a little off to me. But for obvious reasons).
